1) My landlord decided that 8am on a Saturday was the perfect time to start sanding and varnishing the floors above us. When I complained she said she'd already notified me. She had, but what she said in her email was that it would all be done between 9 and 5, during the week. She also never mentioned the toxic fumes from the polyurethane, which made us nauseous and gave us headaches. I wouldn't let the issue drop and finally got a rent reduction this month. Note to tenants: don't let your landlord get away with bullshit like this.
2) Same landlord has not turned on the heat for weeks. That one 90 degree day we had in early April doesn't make it alright to shut it off completely. The rest of the month it's been in the low 40s at night. Once again, don't let your landlord get away with this kind of cheap-ass maneuver. The heat is back on after another back-and-forth.
3) In a separate, but equally annoying issue, I have a bunch of stories out in limbo, which is par for the course. I just got a letter for a story I sent out 18 months ago and had almost forgotten about. They were rejecting it, and it only took them a year and a half to come to that decision. I should look on the bright side: at least they responded at all. Some places don't even do you that small courtesy.

Food for you! Glad you stuck up for yourselves! I hate when people try to take advantage and think you won't fight back. No heat? really? what the hell are you paying for?
Just like Annie's mess with David's bridal. They think you are not going to say anything and they keep trying to take advantage of you.
AS far as your stories go...any one who doesn't like your writing is STUPID!!
Have you looked into self publishing? I would buy several copies!
Miss you so much. I love your pictures from Japan, especially the ones with the cherry blossoms. What a great time to go!
Annie's shower is May 23, a Sunday. We are coming in for it! I hope you guys come out. Jack can hang out with you and Dad while we are at the shower.
talk to you soon.
Maria
We'll definitely be there on the 23rd! That's awesome!
yeah, the landlady did everything we asked after I kept complaining. She probably thinks I'm a big pain in the ass, but hey, she shouldn't screw with a librarian! Hopefully things will be OK from here on out.
As far as the stories go, taste is very subjective and I can understand not everyone will want to publish my stuff. What's absurd is that they'll hang onto it for half a year or a year or more and tell you they don't want you to submit anywhere else while they have it. Some places are so bad they never even get back to you.
